In Victoria, B.C., spotting the aurora (northern lights) is uncommon but rewarding. It depends on strong solar activity and clear, dark skies, often requiring hours of waiting and a stroke of luck. The lights begin as subtle waves of colour, which can be hard to see and appear mostly white. Sometimes, they turn into the bigger displays that are shown here, with vibrant shades of green and purple being most common. They can come and go quickly, or dance for several hours, depending on the conditions. This collection was taken in 2024 across several cold nights in October and November.
